Write Letters to the Editor

We need to inform New Jerseyans about the scientific and economic reasons to support increased public funding for research in New Jersey. With the current focus on funding for stem cell research, you may have seen "Letters to the Editor" in your newspaper both supporting and opposing stem cell research. Your letter of support to your local newspaper is very important. Opponents of stem cell research spend a great deal of time generating letters to the editor, because they know that newspaper readers -and state legislators - read them carefully.

To be effective, letters to the editor should be short. Try to limit your letter to about 150 words.

If you have a personal reason for your support of stem cell research, don't be afraid to say so. Parents, spouses, relatives, and friends of those suffering from a disease that could be helped or cured by stem cell research are usually the best advocates. Almost everyone is close to someone who could benefit from stem cell research, and your speaking out makes everyone more aware of this fact.

If you are a scientist or researcher, we need you to speak up! Even if this is not your area of research, it's important to let New Jerseyans know how important research is to our state's economy, and about the efforts we need to make to be competitive with other states.

When you've finished writing your letter, proofread it carefully and sign it with your name, address, and telephone number. Many newspapers will call to verify that you wrote the letter before printing it.

Most newspapers accept letters to the editor through the mail, by fax, or by email. Check with the newspapers where you are submitting your letter to find out if there is a preferred method.

Finally, send your letter to all the newspapers in your area. It's perfectly acceptable to send the same letter to more than one newspaper, since not everyone reads all of their area newspapers.

Please email a copy of the letter to the editor that you've written to info@njstemcell.org, and we will post it on this website.
